It became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985. Originally, the historic Mosque City was known as ‘Khalifatabad’. It is situated at the outskirts of Bagerhat town is not very far from the dense mangrove forest of the Sundarbans. Khalifatabad was a Muslim colony. It was founded by the Turkish general, a saint warrior Ulugh Khan Jahan in the 15th century. The infrastructure of the city reveals significant technical skills in many mosques as well as early Islamic monuments. Baked bricks were used for the construction of the buildings. The planning of the city is distinctly dominated by Islamic architecture and the decorations were a combination of Mughal and Turkish architecture.

Khan Jahan built a network of roads , bridges , public buildings and reservoirs to make the city habitable. There are about 360 mosques in the city. Among them the most remarkable is the multi-domed Shat Gambuj Mosciue. The mosque is unique in the sense that it has 60 pillars that support the roof, with 77 low height domes. The 4 towers at 4 corners have smaller domes on the roof as well. The vast prayer hall has l1 arched doorways on the east and 7 each on the north and south for light and ventilation. It has 7 aisles running along the length of the mosque and 11 deep curves between the slender stone columns. These columns support the curving arches created by the domes. The thickness of the arches is 6 feet and have slightly narrowing hollow and round wall.

The west wall in the interior has 11 mihrabs (Niche in mosque pointing towards Makkah). These mihrabs are decorated with stonework and terracotta. The floor of the mosque is made of brick. Besides being used as a prayer hall, Khan Jahan used the mosque as his court too. International Mother Language Day

February 21 is the International Mother Language Day which is observed all over the world. The day is historically related to Bangladesh. Once The Indian subcontinent belonged to the British rule. In 1947, the subcontinent was divided into India and Pakistan. Pakistan had two parts. One was East Pakistan and the other was West Pakistan. Bu t the people of East Pakistan were oppressed by the government. Even they wanted to snatch away the mother tongue of the people of East Pakistan. Mohammad Ali Jinnah declared, “Urdu, and Urdu shall be the state language of Pakistan.” But the Banglees protested against this declaration strongly. All the students of Dhaka University brought out a procession violating Section 144 imposed by the government. The day was 21 February 1952. The police fired openly on the students. Salam, Barkat, Rafiq, Jabbar etc, sacrificed their lives for the sake of their mother tongue. Now, the day is observed with due respect and solemnity to the martyred heroic sons of this country. The day is a public holiday all over the world. In our country, people from all walks of life offer floral wreaths at the foot of Shaheed Minar. They sing the mournful song ‘Amar Bhaier Rokte Rangano...amiki vulite pari’. Various cultural organizations arrange different programmers highlighting the heroic deed of martyred sons of the soil. Radio, TV air special programmers on this occasion. National dailies also bring out special supplements on this day. However, UNESCO in recognition of the sacrifices of the martyrs for the rightful place of Bangla, announced February 21 as the International Mother Language Day to be observed all over the world . The day is annually observed to promote awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism. This day has a lot of significances in our national life. It teaches us to be united, brave and patriotic. It also denotes genuine love and respect for the mother tongue of the Banglees.

9. Truthfulness of Hazrat Abdul Quadir Zilani

Hazrat Abdul Quader Jilani was one of the most famous figures in the history of the Muslim. He was very religious and truthful. One day he was going to Baghdad for education. On the eve of his departure from home, his mother said to him, “My son, never tell a lie and don’t get frightened in danger.” Baghdad was far away from his home. He began his journey in the company of a band of merchants. The way was infested with robbers and after five days a gang of robbers fell upon the travelers. The robbers first took away the huge amount of money and other valuable things of the merchants. Then one of the robbers caught hold of the boy. The gang leader saw it and said, “Let the boy go. He has nothing with him. At this the boy said, No, you are wrong. I have forty gold coins sewn in my sleeves.” The leader asked him why he had told them about his gold coins. The boy said in reply that at the time of his departure his mother had forbidden him to tell a lie in any situation. He could not disobey his mother. Hearing this, a radical change came into the gang leader. He gave up robbery with all his men. They began to lead a good and honest life.

11. Describing graph & chart The yearly imports and exports (billion dollars) of Bangladesh

The graph in the question paper shows the yearly amounts of imports and exports of a country in billion dollars. Here 3 years’ imports and exports have been shown through two types of column- the black colored columns represent the export and the gray colored ones show the imports. In the beginning year (2010), the import has been figured at 18 billion dollars and the export at 15 billion dollars. In the 2nd year (2011), the export is shown to be 20 billion dollars and import is 25 billion dollars. In the last year (2012), export stands at 25 and import at 30 billion dollars. So, the business, as shown in the graph, with foreign countries, is on the increase. But it, at the same time, presents rather a pessimistic picture of our economy, an imbalance of trade. Because, while the amount of both imports and exports is increasing, our export cannot surpass the import. In fact, it continuously suffered from an unfavorable balance of trade.

এসএসসির ইংরেজি প্রথম পত্রের আরেকটি মডেল টেস্ট আগামী সংখ্যায়
