‘Love and Friendship’
Theme : The main theme of the poem is man’s ingratitude towards other fellow beings and the poet makes a comparison between human beings and that of natural forces. The poet realizes the hard realities that man is very unkind, ungrateful, betrayer and narrow minded. He does not remember anyone when his purpose is served. But man is supposed to have reasons, humanitarian qualities and gratefulness. On the other hand natural forces are considered cruel, vanishing, destroyer etc. But the poet has experienced from his social life that it happens quite opposite. Man’s ungratefulness gives him pains. It seems to the poet that natural forces are rather less painful than human behaviour.
‘The School boy’
Theme : The theme of the poem is the prevailing situation in school education and an appeal of a little school boy. The poet feels that a school life for a child or a school boy should be interesting, attractive, playful and a life of freedom etc. Through the practices of interesting items of education a school boy can learn easily, spontaneously and naturally. But what happens in school is frustrating and unreal, unfriendly, fearful, disgusting and boring. Teachers’ behaviour to the school learners is very formal and it creates a gap between the learners and teachers. So, the boy in the poem wants to escape from school rather than learning. The message of the poem is to treat the school learners with affection and love by creating a friendly atmosphere of learning.
Theme : The theme of the poem is the cruel fate of a young labour and the attitude of the capitalist society. The poet has dramatized a miserable life of an immature youth. The poem also tells about the economic state of the early industrial time. The boy was put to heavy burden of work just for his livelihood. He wanted to escape from this work but could not do because of hard realities of life. He wanted to have a little relief during his supper time. But unfortunately he made a terrible accident and lost his life. No one is to mourn over this tragic death because of mechanical attitude of the society. Actually, the boy represents the entire down-trodden section of the working class people.
I Have Seen Bengal’s Face
Theme : The theme of the poem is the timeless and everlasting natural beauty of Bangladesh. The poet’s treatment of nature in this poem is very lively, appealing and touchy. The poet is in love with the perpetual beauty of his motherland. He feels that his thirst for beauty has been so quenched that he doesn’t need to see the beauty of the world any more. He sees how generous nature has been to his motherland. The poet has drawn the beauty from various objects and has become fantasized to see these. The poet is fully tantalized by the incomparable beauty of Bengal. His poem makes the reader very emotional and enamored. A kind of patriotic feeling overshadows their minds.
Theme : The theme of the poem is the necessity of having dreams in our life. Dreams encourage and drive people to achieve their goal. The poet says all people dream but they do not dream in the same way. Some people dream when they sleep to take rest after a long day’s labour. They sleep with a mind jammed with many wishes and wants. On waking up they find that those dreams were all pointless and futile. These dreams can have no impact on their life. But there are some dreamers whom the poet calls dangerous people. These people dream with their eyes open which means they make their dreams consciously and from then they start working to make those dreams into reality.
‘The Lake Isle of Innisfree’

Theme: The theme of the poem is the poet's longing for peace. He aspires to go beyond the buzzing and chaotic life. He imagines a world of absolute peace. His desired place is Innisfree, an island with all allurements of life. There he will enjoy sweet bird's sing. The bees will hum for him. The murmuring of the stream will keep the poet awake. He wants to shun city life as it is full of grey troubles. He thinks that only nature is free from malice, greed and other human limitations. For these negative sides of the city life he intends to flight to the Lake of Innisfree, a place where he was born and nurtured. The poet contends that this place will provide him absolute peace. In this poem a nostalgic tone is present.
